Who were Joab and Amasa?
Joab was the son of Zeruiah, King David’s sister, and Amasa was King David’s nephew, son of Abigail, David’s sister. They were cousins, and both served as military commanders under King David.
Joab's role in King David's army
Joab was positioned as commander of David’s armies because of his victory over the Jebusites, which led to the possession of the city of Jerusalem. He fought and won many battles for the king but was known for his personal lack of self-control, which led to problematic actions.
Amasa's role in Absalom's rebellion
Amasa was appointed by Absalom, David’s son, to lead the rebel army that sought to overthrow King David. Absalom was the third son of King David, hot-blooded, impetuous and popular among his countrymen. He grew restless with ambition and began plotting his father’s overthrow. When Absalom’s plan to take the throne was in place, he appointed Amasa captain over his rebel army.
Why did Joab kill Amasa?
Joab killed Amasa because he suspected Amasa of being a potential rival for David's favor. Amasa was slow to mobilize the army to put down the rebellion of Sheba, which led Joab to suspect that Amasa was conspiring with Sheba. Joab was fiercely loyal to his uncle David, but he was also very ambitious. Amasa foolishly joined the rebellion against his uncle, and he fatally trusted Joab as a comrade, although Joab was a man with a reputation for bloody revenge.
The circumstances of Amasa's death
Amasa was killed by Joab in cold blood while they were at the great rock in Gibeon. Joab pretended to greet Amasa with a kiss, and then he plunged a dagger into Amasa's fifth rib. Amasa died without being stabbed again. Joab's action was treacherous, and it was not the first time he had betrayed someone. Joab had a brother, Asahel, who was killed by Abner. Joab also killed Abner in a similar fashion as he did Amasa.
