As Christians, we are called to live a life that is pleasing to God, but often we find ourselves struggling with the desires and inclinations of our flesh. Carnality, or the flesh, refers to our natural human tendencies that are opposed to the will of God. Overcoming carnality is a crucial aspect of our spiritual growth and development, and it requires a deep understanding of the flesh and the spirit, as well as a commitment to self-discipline and spiritual growth.
Understanding the Flesh
The flesh is our natural human nature, which is driven by our desires, emotions, and thoughts. It is the part of us that wants to control and dominate our lives, and it is opposed to the will of God. The flesh is not just our physical bodies and brains, but also our minds and emotions, which can be influenced by the world around us. The flesh is constantly at war with the spirit, seeking to lead us away from God and into sin and rebellion.
The Consequences of Carnality
Living a life dominated by the flesh has serious consequences. It leads us into sin and rebellion against God, causing us to miss out on the blessings and joy that come from living a life that is pleasing to Him. Carnality also leads to spiritual stagnation, causing us to become complacent and apathetic in our faith. Furthermore, it damages our relationships with others, causing us to become self-centered and unloving.
Overcoming Carnality
How can we overcome carnality and live a life that is pleasing to God? Here are some practical steps we can take:
1. Recognize and understand the flesh: The first step to overcoming carnality is to recognize and acknowledge the existence of the flesh. We must understand that the flesh is our natural human nature, and it is opposed to the will of God.
2. Die to self: We must die to our old self and our fleshly desires, and be born again of the Spirit. This means surrendering our lives to God and allowing Him to transform us.
3. Walk in the Spirit: We must walk in the Spirit, allowing Him to guide and direct us. This means being sensitive to His leading and obeying His commands.
4. Practice self-discipline: We must practice self-discipline, denying ourselves and taking up our cross daily. This means saying no to our fleshly desires and yes to God's will.
5. Seek accountability: We must seek accountability from others, surrounding ourselves with people who will encourage and support us in our spiritual growth.
Overcoming carnality is a lifelong process that requires discipline, self-awareness, and a deep reliance on the Holy Spirit. By recognizing and acknowledging the flesh, dying to self, walking in the Spirit, practicing self-discipline, and seeking accountability, we can break free from the flesh and live a life of spiritual victory. Let us commit to living a life that is pleasing to God, and may we be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
